Speed to Lead: Why the First Shop to Text Back Gets the Job

Why answering in seconds wins jobs, what to send first, and how to follow up.

A buyer asking for a PPF, tint or ceramic quote almost never asks just one shop. They fill out two or three forms, call whoever answers, and book with the shop that makes it easy. Most of the time that's the shop that replied first.

1. Seconds, not hours

When someone sends a quote request, they're on their phone with your site still open. Reply while they're still there and you're having a conversation. Reply four hours later and you're one of three texts they've half forgotten about.

At our own shop, Skyline Customs in Chantilly, VA, website leads get their first text in a median of about 3 seconds. Nobody types that fast: the text goes out automatically the moment the form is sent, and a person picks up the conversation from there.

2. What the first text should say

Keep it short and human. Use their name, say what they asked about, and ask one easy question:

  • "Hi Sam, it's Skyline Customs. Got your request for full front PPF on the Model Y. Is it new, or does the paint need a polish first?"

One question they can answer in a few words keeps the conversation going. A wall of prices and links ends it.

3. Missed calls are leads too

If you're under a car when the phone rings, the caller usually doesn't leave a voicemail. They call the next shop. A text back right after a missed call ("Sorry we missed you, what can we help with?") brings a lot of those people back.

4. Follow up more than once

Most people who don't book right away aren't saying no. They're busy. A few friendly follow-ups over the next week or two, a text, a call, an email, catch them when they're ready. At Skyline a typical lead hears from us about six times in its first two weeks, then we stop.

5. Track what happens

Know how many quote requests you get, how fast each one heard back, and how many booked. Since February 2026 Skyline has had 3,292 leads, and 172 of them became paying customers. Numbers like that tell you whether a slow week is a lead problem or a follow-up problem.

The short version

  • Answer every quote request and missed call within a minute, automatically if you have to.
  • Make the first text short, personal and easy to answer.
  • Follow up for about two weeks, then stop.
  • Count leads, reply time and bookings every month.

This is the follow-up we set up for every shop we work with: instant texts for form leads and missed calls, then texts, calls and emails until they book. Get a free audit and we'll show you how fast your shop answers today.
